Van ‘t Ent chapter 4

It’s wednesday, today Jacob will have an interview with Lars and Morris. After Elise’s surprising comments, he is glad Lars is the first.

Interview with Lars Svenson

To break the ice a bit, Jacob asks Lars about his interests in philosophy, physics and mathematics. Lars responds very enthusiastically about that and tries to explain his most recent mathematical theory to Jacob. Jacobs lets the guy talk and waits for a possibility to change the subject to more down-to-earth subjects.

When Lars points out how the foundation of his theory was laid during his University years, Jacobs immediately asks:
“And in which dorm did you live during University?”
“Uhm, I lived with my mother. You know, she cooked my meals, did my laundry and brought me to class, so I could concentrate to graduating. She was the most loving mother anyone could have. God have mercy on her soul.”
“Yes, I understand your mother recently died. My condolances to you. When did it happen, by the way.”
“Last spring, it’s now almost four months ago and I’m still no used to her not being around.” Jacob looks the other way when Lars is unable to speak for some time. When Lars blows his nose, Jacob resumes the interview.
“It must be a huge difference for you, having to do the housework and everything yourself.”
“Oh no, my mother took really good care of me. She arranged for me to have an in-living housekeeper who does everything. Everyday when I get home, my dinner is served immediately, just as my mother did.”
“But wouldn’t you like to make your own meals, clean up your own dirt and be by yourself in your own home?” Jacob makes an effort to make Lars see the consequences of entering the Legacy challenge.
“I will find a decent wife right away and marry her. And then she can take care of me, just as my mother did. I swore to myself I will never ever cook my own meals.”
After this answer, Jacob doesn’t know what to ask or to say. He quickly ends the interview without showing Lars the Legacy lots.

When the door closes, Jacob stretches out on the sofa. Elise was right, Lars is an intelligent, but emotionally immature man. Of course he could be the Legacy founder, but then it’s wouldn’t be this new, out-of-the-ordinary, revolutionary challenge show. How many wives would have to endure this kind of men, every day? They wouldn’t want to look at a copy of their husband, when they have a few moments for themselves to relax.
No, Lars will definitely not be the founder. He will ask his secretary to send him a letter. He can’t even stand the thought of having to talk once more to Lars. Good thing is that he still has half an hour before Morris Rosario comes for his interview. He takes an espresso and reads the paper, trying to relax a bit.

Interview with Morris

The moment Morris steps into his office, Jacob is a little set back at the clothes Morris is wearing. It seems like he didn’t take care of his presentation even though this is a very important interview. But when he starts the interview his opinion on Morris changes rapidly. He speaks in a very nice manner and answers politely to his questions. Jacob gets the impression that Morris is far more intelligent than his appearance gives him credit for.
Jacob is the most impressed by the way Morris always seemed to succeed in his plans, no matter what came in the way. Like when Morris needed new soccer shoes…

“I felt terrible,” Morris tells, “because I was the only player in the team that couldn’t afford new shoes. More than half of my salary I send to my family in the Antilles and that leaves me with very little to live on.
And then, one day after we trained, I saw another player throw away his soccer shoes. I thought that they were good enough to wear, so when everyone had returned home I took then out of the garbage bin. I was right. These shoes were ok, but just needed to be polished very badly. I tried them on and, oh miracle, they were the right size.
The next day I bought the finest shoe cream and brush - that was all I could spend on other shoes - and polished them and polished them again until they looked brand new.
Next sunday during the match, the other players saw my shoes and asked me where I bought these superb shoes. And didn’t answer directly, but I was glad no-one recognized my shoes as my teammate’s old shoes.”Morris ends his story while staring in front of him. It must be a very pleasant memory for him.
Jacob breaks the silence: “That was an impressive story and it displays exactly what kind of problems you could have in the Legacy challenge, being the founder and all. What do you want from this challenge for yourself?”
“I want to have my own life for a change and I find it very hard to not take care of my family. With this Legacy however, I have to keep the money for myself. That will help me build my own home and life and help my family to start taking care of themselves for the first time.” Morris has a very decisive look in his eyes. This challenge obviously means a lot to him.
“You know,” Jacob replies, “even when you are not selected to be the Legacy founder, you can still decide to keep your hard-earned money for yourself. But of course, that’s up to you.”
“You’re right,” Morris says, “but I also like the other aspects of the concept: to try to build up something great to last, to overcome difficulties, to try send most of your children to university. I definitely hope I may be the founder.”

Jacob ends the interview after these last words. He doesn’t have to say much more to Morris, he is already very impressed with what he heard. How right Elise was, how well of a candidate Morris could be. And Lars is definitely history. He starts getting curious to get to know Cindy and see if she equals Morris as a possible founder.

Interview with Cindy

The next day, Jacob had to go to the office first. In the evening Cindy comes for her interview. Jacob didn’t get much sleep last night, he was constantly thinking about Morris’ story. He was glad he had the time to drink an espresso before Cindy arrived, because he felt wasted.
As expected, Cindy makes quite an impression when she enters his office. She really is a beautiful woman with good looks and a well-proportioned body. Jacob understands immediately all male collegues Cindy has had in the past.
When the interview starts, Jacob is amazed at the wide number of subjects that interest Cindy. She has an opinion on a lot of things, like the environment, and knows how to put it nicely but determinate. It’s not just looks, it’s her total appearance that confuses Jacob. He is sitting there quietly, until he realises Cindy is watching him. OMG, how unprofessional his behaviour is. He tries to focus very well on the rest of this interview.
“What kind of careers do attract you the most? You know you have to stay in one job for a while to make more money.” Jacob notices the sharpness in his question. What is he trying to prove?
But Cindy doesn’t appear to be offended and simply answers the question: “As long as it isn’t very active, I think I can handle a lot of different jobs. Most of the time I know how to build relationships with co-workers and they can help me on achieving the qualities. I didn’t get promoted much before, because it was just the kind of jobs that I don’t like. With all the new opportunities the Legacy offers, I’m sure I will find something suitable to my qualities and personality.”
Jacob gets the picture, but he doesn’t want Cindy to leave already. So he is asking her some more questions about succesful events in her life and things that really matter to her. Cindy answers are polite and frank and the two of them chat on until the time for the interview is almost up.
“When can I expect to hear something from you?”
“Well, Cindy, you are a very good candidate, but there is someone else how is quite as well suited as yourself. For this situation, I have already arranged for an assessment to take place. Tomorrow morning, you and the other candidate will be brought to one of the Legacy lots. There will be a computer waiting for you. There you can fill in a questionnaire that is the actual assessment. The results will be send to my office where a therapist will interpret the results. Depending on that, one of you will start the Legacy next Monday. Do you agree to take an assessment?”
“Of course, I do. I love computer tests. I’m so happy you will give me this chance, Jacob.”
“Alright, that’s settled then. Don’t be late tomorrow morning. Good bye!”
“Good bye!”

Jacob and Elise having breakfast together

The next morning Elise and Jacob are having breakfast together.
“Darling, you didn’t get much sleep again last night, did you?” Elise asks her husband who has a tired look.
“No, I didn’t. I couldn’t stop thinking about the two most suitable candidates.”
“Who?”
“Morris and Cindy.”
“See, I told you. I’m glad you’re done with Lars. But who are you going to choose?”
“I don’t know yet. They are both going to have an assessment today, on one of the Legacy lots.”
“How exciting! Where are they going?”

Cindy's assessment

“Cindy is going to Mamma Mia. That seemed the nicest lot to her.

Morris' assessment

And Morris is going to Phantom. He liked the view from that hill very much.”
“When do you expect the results to be in?” Elise asks.
“It takes them 2 hours to take the test. Then my collegue needs 1 hour to interpret the results. They start at 9 AM, so before 3 PM the new Legacy founder has been selected.”
“Well, we can but wait and see.”
“Absolutely.”

  1. Wow, this is a great blog! I love how you’ve taken the Legacy Challenge and turned it into a reality-style show. I think Morris would be the best candidate based on his motivation and abilities, but Cindy might be the most interesting to watch because she will have the most difficulties to overcome. I look forward to seeing what will happen!

  2. Hi! I found your blog because of a comment you left on jen’s site. Thanks for making a fresh story. I think that there should be two legacy challenges side by side (since both candidates preferred different lots). Then, once it was done, we could see who wound up better! :)
