Batavia Ch. 5

The De Winter family

Dirk De Winter was still suffering gravely from the loss of his wife. Although he likes nothing better than a lot of company, he had become more to himself and didn’t take a huge interest in his children.

Gijs De Winter felt that, being the only son, he had to take his responsibility for the household. He was looking for a nice girl to become his wife and to give him lots of children. Moreover, he wanted to marry off his sister Maaike to a good fellow. However, the first man Maaike ever seemed interested in was Bouke Schaafsma, Batavia’s reputed womanizer.

Maaike talking to Bouke

Maaike, naive and sweet girl that she was, entered into the conversation with Bouke with a lot of enthusaism. The attention only from an attractive man like Bouke was enough to melt down the serious girl and get her to talk about almost anything. Gijs watched the two of them with hawk’s eye and he wished Bouke to the other end of the world.

But then he got distracted by the passing by of Bouke’s sister Sietske. Gijs had known Sietske all his life. He had even been to the funeral of their parents and paid his respect to them. Sietske seemed a respectable woman to Gijs, but today he saw her for the first time as a possible wife. He immediately jumped up and went over to her and chat about the weather and such.

While talking to Sietske, Gijs was thinking about a strategy to convince Sietske he would be a good husband for him. He began telling jokes, gave her a few compliments about her hair and then began flirting with her.

Gijs flirting with Sietske

The flirting seemed to cause the wished for reaction and Sietske seemed more willing to stay and talk some more to Gijs. He was so wrapped up in his attentions to Sietske, that he didn’t notice at all what his sister was doing.

Maaike and Bouke flirting

She was flirting with Bouke and he was more than willing to respond and encourage the flirtations. Shy Maaike who normally didn’t do much beside reading, cooking and cleaning, was very rapidly loosing her head over a guy like Bouke.

The old Dirk De Winter didn’t pay any attention at all to what his children were doing. He had noticed the Schaafma children had come, but was just busy reading and didn’t want to be disturbed. He felt so tired ever since his wife had died, that he hardly came outside but to go to work. Thus, he didn’t see Maaike making secret appointments with Bouke about another visit….

Maaike and Bouke whispering

…. nor that Gijs seemed to have found a decent girl, who liked him and who could be a perfect wife. Sietske was known in Batavia as a very family-oriented woman, but all that didn’t matter to Dirk anymore. He just wished he could die in peace to be rejoined to his wife.

Life continued as normal. Maaike and Gijs had their jobs, Dirk would spend some hours working too. Since Gijs wasn’t spending much of the money, the family could live simply but comfortably. They went to bed, woke up to eat and to work, did some housework or some reading and went to bed.

The only difference was that from time to time, Maaike and Gijs would invite their best friends Bouke and Sietske to come over and spend the afternoon or the evening.

Maaike in love with Bouke

Bouke was the most frequent visitor. Apparently he understood that Maaike was easy bait and he was flirting her and even hugging her as much as he could. He felt that it wouldn’t be long before Maaike would let herself go and that he would get the ultimate pleasure from seeing this girl.

Gijs had slowly fallen in love with Sietske, his moves towards her were cautious and slow. He didn’t want to rush into anything.

Gijs and Sietske flirting

The strategy seemed to work though as Sietske began to show more of her affection for Bouke. It didn’t take a lot for each of them to know they had found happiness with each other. Since they were both a bit shy, they didn’t dare to confess to the other though and silently enjoyed each others company.

In the meanwhile, Gijs had tried to follow Maaike’s actions with Bouke. Because of his own relationship with Sietske, she sometimes slipped from his attention. Afterwards, Gijs would always find out that the fling with Bouke had only become more and more intense. Gijs dreaded the day Maaike would accept to set aside her chastity only to please Bouke.

Both De Winter kids in love

That day came sooner than Bouke expected. He has invited Sietske and had only attention for her. Therefor he didn’t see that Maaike had invided Bouke into the double bed and shared everything there is to share with a man.

Maaike had felt that time had come to seduce Bouke to propose to her. She had fallen madly in love for him and was blind for his affections to other women. She was only hoping by taking him into her bed, that he would finally ask her to become his wife and to give her children.

Maaike's first WooHoo with Bouke

It was her first WooHoo and she noticed Bouke seemed much more experienced. Bouke, feeling that his ultimate goal with Maaike was near, didn’t care for tender love and just took what he wanted. Maaike suffered a bit of pain, but she felt proud for being able to give a man like Bouke pleasure. She just let him do his thing and tried to relax. Before she knew it, it was over and Bouke went out of the bed. Maaike hurried to the bathroom to tidy herself up before her father would come home or her brother would find out.

Gijs en Sietske engaged

Bouke however was too busy to notice what Maaike had done. He finally had found the courage to confess his love to Sietske and to ask her to become his wife. His father had given him the engagement ring of his mother. Gijs found this was the perfect moment to give it to his beloved Sietske as a token of the promiss he just made her.

Sietske was overjoyed and jumped into his arms. He was sure everything would be perfect. Both of them couldn’t wait to get married and start a family. Sometimes Gijs even felt the urge to take Sietske to the double bed, but he didn’t give in. He didn’t want to be like Bouke and wanted to wait until he was married to Sietske.

Maaike hadn’t been caught with Bouke and therefor she asked him to come over the next night again. Bouke, who loved the giving nature of Maaike, immediately came and they went into the double bed. Gijs was still at work and her father was sleeping. Maaike wanted to give herself one more time to Bouke, hoping he would pop the question afterwards.

Maaike and Bouke saying goodbye

But it didn’t go as Maaike had planned. Bouke didn’t make any move to fall on his knee or something. And just when he was saying goodbye to Maaike, Gijs stormed in and caught his sister. Maaike shooed Bouke quickly away and went over to her brother. She could see he was trembling with rage and he started the worst argument ever.

  3. Indeed, I really love how all these families get connected one way or the other, like in a soap opera. It has plenty material for drama, romance and such.

I think the Prosperity Challenge could offer the same possibilities.
