Batavia Ch. 8

The Schaafsma Family

Bouke was very pleased with his latest conquest: Maaike De Winter. She was so naive and in love that she didn’t refuse him anything. He knew he was going to get a lot of pleasure from her. He knew his sister didn’t approve of his way of dealing with women, but to him it was the only way he knew, the only way that worked for him.

He had approved of her engagement to Gijs De Winter though. The guy seemed a good match for his sister. Besides, the sooner she was out of the house, the more space he had for his relationships.

The next morning however, Maaike came to see Bouke. He could tell she had cried a lot. Although he dreaded what she had to say, he asked her to tell him what was wrong. She didn’t need any more encouragement to start talking about the terrible row she had had with her brother over her relationship with Bouke.
“He called you an evil man with neither moral nor principals,” Maaike sobbed. “It was mean, because I know you love me. You do love me, right?”
Bouke saw that her tears had left marks on her cheeks and she looked up at him with such confidence, he didn’t dare tell the truth. So he affirmed that he loved her and hugged her to give her some comfort.

But she wanted to look at him again and then she said: “Can I stay with you, I can’t go back to my brother. He hates you and he is never going to allow me to see you again. Please let me stay!”

For a moment, Bouke didn’t answer. He tried to think straight. He hadn’t thought about Maaike coming to stay with him, because he had no intention of marrying her. But when he thought how easy his carnal lusts could be satisfied when she were around all the time, he decided it wasn’t a bad idea. So he told her she could stay with him and asked if she needed anything from her brothers house. Apparently she had prepared for this, because she had taken a small bag with another set of clothes and some personal belongings.

He took the bag and showed her around the house, although it was very small. It had a single bed in the main room and a double bed in the separate bedroom. And that’s where Bouke wanted to go most of all. He sat on the bed and invited Maaike with him. Soon he began making out with her.

He realized she was again accepting his actions and decided to make the most of this occasion. He slowly put her down on the bed and pulled the blankets. She followed his initiative and soon Bouke enjoyed another WooHoo.

Bouke and Maaike WooHoo

Very soon, Maaike felt at home with Bouke and she made herself useful by cleaning and cooking. Bouke was pleased with himself for letting her stay with him. She turned out to be both a perfect maid and a giving lover. What else could a man wish for…..

One day, however, Maaike didn’t feel very well, she felt nauseous and tired and her body felt different than normal. She decided to stay in the house instead of going out in the fields and do some necessary things there. She was busy cleaning the kitchen, when the nausea got worse and she had to run for the bathroom. When she was done, she felt relieved and noticed she was very hungry. That surprized her a lot, until she realized what the reason might be. She is pregnant with Bouke’s child!

Maaike realizes she is pregnant

Although Maaike would love to have a child, the thought of this pregnancy scares her a lot. After all, she isn’t a married woman and Bouke might send her back to her brother. He wouldn’t, would he? He loves her, or not? Maaike is in great distress over all this and has trouble to concentrate on her work. She is both waiting for Bouke and being afraid of his return. What will he say, how will he react?

When Sietske and Bouke return form the fields at the beginning of the evening, Maaike immediately takes Bouke to the bedroom and tells him she’s pregnant with his child. Maaike hardly dares to look at his face.

Bouke is silent for a while. And then he says something Maaike hadn’t thought about at all: “Tonight your brother Gijs will come to visit Sietske. He might as well take a decision about what to do with you and your child.”

Maaike had no idea Gijs was coming, she hadn’t spoken to him after that bad row over Bouke. She was terrified of his reaction on her pregnancy, especially because he had been very negative about her relationship with Bouke. With a heavy heart she followed Bouke to the table to have some dinner. Bouke casually told Sietske that Maaike was pregnant and started to eat. Sietske only looked to Maaike and for a moment, a smile seemed to light up her face. Then she continued to eat.

When Gijs arrived, Sietske immediately told him the latest gossip, that his sister had been as stupid as to get herself pregnant from Bouke. Gijs didn’t think Sietske was serious, but when he realized she was, he became mad once again, both at Bouke and Maaike.

Sietske and Gijs gossip

First he went to find his sister and lecture her about her behaviour. She was terrified of Gijs, because she could see his anger. He lectured her severely about love, marriage, relationships and decency. And then Gijs wanted to know what the plans were for Bouke and Maaike. Maaike confessed that Bouke wanted him, Gijs, to take the decision. This answer took Gijs by surprise.

Then he went to speak to Bouke and forced him to marry Maaike on the spot. Maaike never knew how Gijs got Bouke this far, but he accepted to do it. It was a private and simple ceremony in the small cabin. Maaike was relieved, finally Bouke had married her. Gijs had saved his family and his sister from the disgrace of an illegitimate child. And Bouke, well Bouke couldn’t care less. Maaike was still his maid and lover and if he wanted to he would look elsewhere for other pleasures.

Gijs was exhausted after all what happened. Sietske noticed this and took him with her to the bedrom. They sat together on the bed, without saying much. Suddenly, the two looked each in the eye and felt the love between them.

And then, despite the lecture he had just given to his sister, Gijs let himself go with his feelings for Sietske and very tenderly made WooHoo to her. She wanted this as much as he did and they both enjoyed these moments together. After Gijs was satisfied, he spent some more time with Sietske and only returned home very early in the morning.

Gijs and Sietske make first WooHoo

Life continued in the Schaafsma home much the same as before. The marriage hadn’t really changed the relationship between Bouke and Maaike. Maaike felt more and more tired because of her pregnancy, but she was happy about her new life.

Sietske however felt she was changed by the night, maybe not because of her brother’s marriage, but by her intimacy with Gijs. She had to vomit every morning and didn’t have the energy she used to have. And so she started to wonder if she might have gotten pregnant too.

Sietske pregnant

Bouke didn’t notice at all what was going on with his wife and his sister. Sietske was glad for that, because she had been negative about his relationship with Maaike and his reaction to her pregnancy. But, she turned out to be pregnant too before she had become Gijs’ wife.

Gijs! How would he react if he found out she was already pregnant with his child. She could only hope for his decency and his principles, that he would keep his promiss and didn’t break up the engagement.

That night he came again to look after his sister. But Sietske quickly went over to him and told him about her own pregnancy. Fortunately, Gijs took the message very well. He said he would still marry her, in fact he would make arrangements so the marriage would take place very soon. Sietske was comforted by the promisses of Gijs and finally started to feel a bit happy about this pregnancy.
