Batavia Ch. 9

The Royal wedding

Finally the day came for which all people of Batavia had waited for: the wedding of King Willem to his fiance Miss Victoria Fitzwilliam. The event had taken months of preparations, the best caterers had been contracted, the most beautiful arch had been constructed and the best champagne had been ordered. Finally the invitations had been sent and Victoria had chosen her wedding gown, all was finally set for the first official Batavian ceremony. Everyone was given a national holiday. From the other side of the fence the peasants could watch the wedding ceremony and all the nobles were invited as guests.

Willem and Victoria were a bit nervous because of all the attention they got. But they were very happy that they would finally be joined as man and wife. When the minister started the wedding ceremony, they exchanged their vows and promissed to stay together for better, for worse, in sickness and in health, till death would part them. The audience was silent and impressed by the sincerety with which these vows and promisses were spoken.

“And therefor,” the minister spoke, “I declare you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride Your Majesty.”
Willem didn’t need any more encouragement to do so and took Victoria in his arms. The nobles all applauded and cheered and the peasants on the other side of the fence did the same. Tears were falling down cheeks of some of the women, as they were deeply touched by this romantic ceremony.

Royal wedding kiss

After the ceremony, Willem turned to his guests to make a speech:
“Dear nobles of Batavia. My wife, Mrs Van Zuilichem and Queen of Batavia, and I want to thank everyone for coming to our party and attending the wedding ceremony. Although our country doesn’t exist since long, it is good to see we are a good people, caring about each other. We need each other in order to strengthen the Kingdom of Batavia and pursuit prosperity and happiness for all Batavians.
As King of Batavia I want to support these goals and give something back to the people that have given me my Kingdom. Therefor I decided to found the Bethel Home.

Bethel Home

Bethel Home will be the place where decent women can go after they have become a widow or an orphan. It is also a place where less fortunate women can learn our Batavian morals and principals. For this, the two Sisters will live in this home and support any woman that comes to live there or that seeks advice on morals and decent behaviour.

Sisters from Bethel Home

Thanks you for your attention. However, do stay for a while, because there is a buffet and a ball. But first, my lovely wife will cut the wedding cake. Please join us in this happy celebration.”

But Willem and Victoria can hardly wait to start the festivities and hurry to the cake. Before any of the guests have arrived, Victoria has already cut the cake and stuffed some of it into her Royal husband’s mouth. Lucky for him he could remove the whipped cream from his face before someone could have seen His Majesty like this. Victoria giggles, because of the cake and the nerves. She is getting more relaxed as the party is getting started and just enjoys the company of her family and the other guests.

Victoria has cut the wedding cake

The eating of the cake is soon to be followed by a toast and another toast and yet another one. Most of them are on the King’s health, as he is the principle Batavian. But others wish Victoria a lot of health, and sons. By all this champagne, the happy couple and the guests are losening up and the party is getting livelier by the minute.

Toast to the King

Then it time for the King and Queen to open the ball, which they readily accept. On the music performed by George Fitzwilliam on the piano, the bride and groom show their enthusiasm and their love to each other and to the guests. Before long other couples enter the dancefloor too.

Even Marie-Claire, the melancholic wife of Jean-Luc De la Tourvelle, seems to have a good time. Since the wedding of George and Elisabeth, things have changed for their little family. It turned out that the main reason for Marie-Claire’s depression was the large, uncomfortable house. At the wedding, she saw the latest work of Sir Branson, the architect, and she immediately fell in love with it. She convinced her husband to have their house built in the same style. In a few weeks tims, the De la Tourvelle family will be able to move to their new home. Apparently it is smaller but more practical, and the furniture is of more quality. Marie-Claire is very much looking forward to it. Rumour has it the Jean-Luc has only accepted to this move, because he wants a happy wife. Apparently they are still in love, as they are dancing together at the ball.

More people dancing

Sooner than everybody hoped for the ball has come to an end and Willem and Victoria go off on their honeymoon. They travel by night to Brussels and spend the day there. Due to obligations of Willem, they return at the beginning of the evening to the palace, exhausted but happy.

Home after their honeymoon

Willem picks up his wife and carries her over the threshold of the palace, upstairs to the Queen’s bedroom. He is so happy to be married to this beautiful woman and he can see in her eye she feels the same.

Since they are full of memories of the marriage, the party and the honeymoon, so they decide to lie down on the bed and talk about everything that has happened in the last 48 hours.
“Did you hear any reaction to the speech I gave, just after we exchanged our vows,” Willem wants to know.
“I think, most of our guest appreciated Bethel Home and what it stands for. I only heart some gossip about being prepared for royal bastards and their mums, but I don’t know who said it.”
“Well, there isn’t going to be a royal bastard as far as I’m concerned. I love you way too much to want to share the bed with anyone else.” Willem looks at Victoria with a little spark in his eye.

Talking about the wedding

The both feel the excitement that has been built over the last months and they know they don’t want to avoid giving in to it any longer. Willem draws his bride near and starts to stroke her hair. Soon their lips meet in a passionate kiss and they feel they can’t hold back any longer: they make WooHoo for the first time, before they finally fall asleep.

Willem en Victoria make first WooHoo

The next day, Willem and Victoria try to set up a new routine. Things have changed drastically at the palace now that Victoria is married to Willem. The maids and servants are instructed on the new routines too and within a few days, the Van Zuilichem household is adapted to the new situation.

During the day, Willem is away frequently to participate in different ceremonies or to attend certain events. All these obligations come with being a King and he really enjoys it. Sometimes Victoria is asked to join him on a special occasion, like the opening of the first Batavian private school, the Huygens Institute.

But lately, Victoria has declined some of these requests, as she doesn’t feel too well. Especially during the morning, she ahs trouble getting started, because she is trembling and a bit nauseous.

Victoria not feeling well

Very soon, they understand however that Victoria is not ill but pregnant. Willem is overjoyed at the prospect of becoming a father and possibly getting an heir to the throne. Victoria is very happy too, although she sometimes gets these enormous cravings for very sweet or very salt food.

Happy with pregnancy

On doctor’s order and following the advice of her husband, Victoria is told to keep her rest and to not attend any public events. Every afternoon, she takes a nap in her own bedroom and the servants are even more attentive to her needs than before. But how much everybody is taking care of her, Victoria feels tired and doesn’t have the energy to do anything at all. She mainly leaves her bed to eat and take a bath and then returns exhausted.

Therefor she is glad when one evening her water breaks and the baby is announcing its coming. Victoria can barely scream for help and Willem doesn’t even have time to call the doctor. He just stands by Victoria to reassure her.

Victoria in pain

Very soon, the baby is born though, a beautiful boy: Willem. Both parents are very proud of the pretty little baby and Willem wants to kiss him on the forehead.

Willem is born

Suddenly Victoria puts Willem in his arms and screams out loud. And to their surprise, another child is born: a daughter with the name of Emma.

Emma is born

Twins, a boy and a girl, an heir to the throne of Batavia and a sister to support him. Victoria and Willem are speechless. They just hold their little babies and think it is a miracle.
