Batavia Ch. 10

The Van Ravenswaaij Family

Because Charlotte’s blood pressure was a bit high, she was told to stay at home and take a lot of rest. Charlotte however didn’t like it at all and felt a bit lonely. That’s why she decided to ask her sister-in-law to come over. Elisabeth was pregnant too, so the two of them had a lot to talk.

Elisabeth and Charlotte talking

Elisabeth told Charlotte everything about the new home for the De la Tourvelle family. She was absolutely sure, Marie-Claire would have gone mad, hadn’t it been for the new home.
“Too bad, she could have been the first one to go off to Bethel Home,” Charlotte reacted a bit mean.
“Hush, Charlotte, don’t say that or you might end up there yourself.”
“It’s alright. Speaking of the King’s gifts to this country, how are the Royal twins, your niece and nephew.”
“In-law. They are prefectly fine. Victoria says that Emma is exactly like her and that Willem is like his father. They are really sweet babies and Victoria loves to cuddle them. His Majesty too, by the way, if he isn’t absorbed by a book or chess play or something.” Elisabeth seems to be well informed about life at the court, which pleases Charlotte very much.

They talk and gossip some more, until Elisabeth leaves to take a nap herself. Charlotte stretches out on the sofa, waiting for Frederik to come home. If only he would be on time today. And if only this baby would come. She was already due since last week, so Charlotte was really fed up with being pregnant. Frederik didn’t look too much at her lately and their last WooHoo had been very long ago.

After a while, Charlotte stood up and went to the dining room to set the table. She wanted to cook diner, when all of a sudden her water broke.

Charlotte's water just broke

Frederik just came home and didnlt understand at all what was going on. But Charlotte yelled at him to fetch the doctor, because the baby was coming. Frederik was glad he could do something and went off quickly.

Frederik is clueless

It was a long night both for Charlotte and Frederik. The doctor came and helped deliver the baby, but it was very hard on Charlotte. It was already near down, when finally the head of the baby could be seen. “Just one big push,” the doctor tried to encourage Charlotte. And then a daughter was born to Frederik and Charlotte, Mathilde.

Mathilde is born

Although it’s a girl, Frederik and Charlotte both adore their child and play and cuddle with it. Frederik makes sure a nanny comes to take care of his wife and his daughter, because Charlotte is still very weak.

With the help of the nanny, Charlotte soon recovers. And with that her desires for Frederik recover too. Frederik has really missed the intimacy with his wife and very soon they enjoy making WooHoo until they’re exhausted. Frederik isn’t doing that for fun only, but also because he wants a son to continue the Van Ravenswaaij family. Charlotte just prays she won’t get pregnant again and tries to think about the fun only.

A few days later over breakfast, Charlotte is scared when she feels a familiar nausea. “Not another pregnancy!” she thinks, but in her heart she knows her prayers haven’t been heard. She hides from Frederik how she is feeling, afraid that he will forget about their intimacy right away. But she knows she cannot hide for long.

Charlotte trying to hide her pregnancy

When Frederik has gone off to work, Charlotte sits down and thinks about her new situation. Suddenly she remembers the fireman that came to extinguish the fire some time ago. It was a very handsome man , who left his adress on little peace of paper to Charlotte. She decides to sent a servant over to him and invite him to her home.

The fireman doesn’t seem to have forgotten the beautiful woman too and accepts the invitation without hesitating. Charlotte takes some time to get to know the man better. When she is sure of his admiration for and attraction to her, she starts to flirt with him. This is her way of getting an “intimacy-insurance”.

What Charlotte doesn’t know is that Frederik was preparing several insurances himself too. He already feared the time when Charlotte would be pregnant with his child and he wouldn’t want to live without intimacy. Therefore he spent many an evening in front of the mirror, when Charlotte was already upstairs sleeping. He practised different poses and imagined himself embracing other women and kissing them.

Soon he found out about Charlotte’s pregnancy. First because she stayed in bed longer in the mornings. And later because he noticed how her belly had grown. He was angry at her for hiding this pregnancy from him, especially since she still hadn’t given him a son. He felt he had every right to work on his insurances and called Mary Thomas.

Mary was a decent wife, pregnant with her second child. Therefor Frederim knew he couldn’t be very intimate with her, but her wanted to know if she was even interested in him. This appeared to be the case, as she responded very quickly to his flirtations.

The next day, the gardener came by. To Frederik’s surprise it appeared to be a woman, probably a peasant who would do anything for money. “She could be a prefect “insurance” for me,” Frederik thought as he approached her and started to flirt with her. As he had hoped for she reacted very well to the attention she got from Frederik and they flirted some more, while Charlotte was upstairs resting. Mathilde’s birthday would be held tonight.

When he knew, Charlotte could come any minute, Frederik quickly whispered something naughty into the gardener’s ear and said goodbye to her.

Frederik and Charlotte gathered in the kitchen and Charlotte brought Mathilde to the cake. With some encouragements from her parents she grew up to be a cute little toddler, oblivious to the secrets her parents kept from each other.

  1. Darn those men and their need for male heirs! Hopefully this one will be a male and Charlotte will be able to get a little bit of peace before Frederick starts demanding another (for the heir and a spare philosophy.)
