Batavia Ch. 11

The Huijssoon Family

At the cabin of Jannes and Gesina Huijssoon, life had continued slowly without many eventful things happening. Gesina was still pregnant and had to rest a lot during the day. She would then lie down on the bed and wonder about her baby. She truly hoped she would get a good relationship with this child, because one of Gesina’s most important fears was to have enemies.

Jannes just went to his work everyday and saved every penny. He was more focussed on their finances and bills than he was taking care of his pregnant wife. Partly that was because he was trying to avoid thinking about Gesina’s defiguration and the possibility that his child would get it too. Jannes knew he would feel ashamed of his child and he prayed vigorously that the child would be born normal.

Then one day, it was time for the baby to be born. Gesina went into labour and obviously was in terrible pain. Jannes didn’t know what to do really and hardly dared to look at his wife.

Then finally Gesina gave birth to a son: Herman. Jannes saw that his worst fear has become true: his son, his first-born son, has the same defiguration his wife has. He couldn’t bear to look at the both of them and he ran of into the fields, trying to get the voice out of his head saying: “You should never have married that disfigured woman, you will never deserve to earn a large sum of money and become someone of more importance!”

Gesina, tired from her pregnancy and the birth of her baby, hardly noticed at first that Jannes went away. She had so much to do, so many things to take care of. When cuddling with little Herman, looking at his defigured body and smelling his scent, she knew she loves him more than anything else.

She turned around, wanting to share her thoughts and emotions with Jannes. Only then she found out he wasn’t around and she started to get worried about him. She quickly put little Herman in his crib and walked to the door to see if she could find Herman outside. When she didn’t see him around the house, she went to the bed and fell asleep, having dreams about Herman and Jannes. She started crying in her sleep.

All of a sudden she woke up, because she felt a hand on her cheeks, wiping away the tears. A voice was whispering soft words, it was Jannes’ voice. He came back to the house and started to comfort his wife as he saw her crying in her sleep.

“Where were you? Why did you leave us alone when little Herman was barely born? Are you afraid of him and his defiguration? Are you afraid of me?” Gesina, now fully awake, felt her body tremble with anger. She had trouble controling her voice, because she didn’t want to wake up Herman.
Jannes had a very guilty look on his face and he bravely admitted he ran away when he saw his son had the same defiguration. “I know there is no excuse for what I did. But for crying out loud, I only married you to please your parents and mine. I learned to live with you and respect your personality. Seeying my son having the same defiguration was just too much. I had such hopes and dreams for him, for me, for us.”

Jannes fell silent again, having said the one thing that had been left unsaid since they were married. And Gesina knew he had been speaking the truth, that she should be grateful to have found a man like Jannes, who treats her very well most of the time. “I’m sorry, Jannes, for yelling at you. I really am very grateful you married me and gave me a son. I’m sorry too Herman has the same defiguration I have, I had hopes and dreams for him too. But he is a child of you and me. Please accept him in your life, in our family. After all, he is your first-born son, your flesh and blood.”

Jannes heard his wife plead for their son and he knew he had no other choice than to accept the fact that his son isn’t “normal”, that he will live a different life. He looked Gesina in the eye and said: “Give me some time. I have to find a way to deal with it, but I know I have no other choice. Just don’t force me to take care of him right now, I will do it when the time is right.” He saw that Gesina had already forgiven him and he slowly put his arm around her shoulders. Then he drew her head towards him and kisses her.

Kissing led to making out and making out led to other very intimate moments. Until Gesina had to go out of the bed to feed Herman and change his diapers.

Gesina and Jannes adjusted their lifes very quickly to the rhythm of little Herman. Gesina took care of him most of the time, while Jannes was working or cooking the meals. Gesina didn’t have time to do the household all by herself too, although she had gotten some days off from work. She had the feeling she didn’t recover well from her pregnancy and everything and she started to worry about it.

Lucky for her, Jannes finally found the courage to take care of his son and enjoyed very much the first time he fed Herman and cuddled with him. Gesina was looking at her husband and her son with tears in her eyes. Now, she wouldn’t be the only parent taking responsibility for the baby. Maybe that was what she would need to get healthy again.

Jannes finally cuddling with Herman

That night Gesina slept deeply and dreamless for the first time since Herman was born. She hardly noticed Jannes slip out of the bed to give Herman a bottle of milk and change his diapers. She was just too tired.

The next morning she didn’t wake up refreshed, though, and she was just in time in the bathroom to throw up. And then she knew why she hadn’t recovered: she was pregnant again. “This isn’t alright,” she tought, “it’s just too soon after Herman was born. Jannes has finally accepted Herman as he is, but will he be able to accept another defigured child in their home?” Gesina didn’t like to be pregnant again and she was afraid for Jannes’ reaction.

Gesina pregnant again

Jannes didn’t react negative nor positive to the news he would be a father again. He was just too busy starting to know Herman and working to be touched by the news. Very soon, Herman became a toddler, without any cake or celebration. The events of the last period had been too hectic to really care about invitations and everything.

Gesina didn’t feel like starting another discussion with Jannes on his uninterested reaction. Having a toddler around her, having to take care of the housework and being pregnant again just made life hard enough on her. They didn’t have enough money to give Herman nice toys so he would often enjoy splattering in the toilet and making a mess in the bathroom. Gesina would lecture him and put him near the kitchen area. But when she turned around to clean the tub, he was playing near the toilet again.

Sometimes, when Jannes had a day off, Gesina had the energy to teach Herman to talk. She was very proud when he called her “mummy” for the first time and at this moments she felt really close to her son. She could only hope that her second child would give her the same joy Herman had given her.

  1. Oh, poor little Herman and poor Gesina. I hope that Jannes doesn’t send them away to live in Bethel house. Maybe they will be able to make a successful life together and he can get past her disfiguration.
